Pyrgos village was the island’s first capital, a medieval fortress overlooking the entire island. For centuries, Pyrgos was Santorini’s main commercial and municipal centre and nowadays, evidence of its former glory can still be admired at the site of its Kasteli. The kasteli was a typical fortification method of medieval Santorini, where the outer walls of the village’s houses were built tall, sturdy and close together so as to create a castle like citadel to defend against pirate attacks.


What has remained of this Kasteli is today’s Pyrgos village. Strolling along its narrow alleys you literally feel as though you travel back in time. When exploring Pyrgos and its Kasteli, make sure to visit one of the oldest churches of the island, Theotokaki and the beautiful church of Panagia. The village also offers an intriguing selection of restaurants, traditional tavernas thata showcase the island’s rich culinary traditions and unique products, cafes and all kinds of shops, making it a popular all day destination. In the evening in particular, Pyrgos offers some spectacular panoramic views of the sunset.

Not only will you be hiking through a Natura 2000 Protected Area, but you will also get to enjoy magnificent panoramic views to the caldera, the entire island and the sea.
If you follow the path further you will reach the beach of Kamari or the beach of Perissa, passing from the archaeological ruins of Ancient Thera on the way. Close to Pyrgos, the tranquil Megalochori is a perfect destination for strolling around its scenic stone paved alleys, especially in the evenings.
If you are looking for a great beach for swimming, the closest beaches to Alaya Suites are Perissa, Perivolos and Kamari, whereas you can easily reach the beaches of Vlychada and the famous Red and White beaches.
